What is CBD & What Are Its Benefits?

Updated: Aug 1, 2018

Keep hearing about the CBD trend that's all over social media now a days? It's a hot topic for a good reason. Learn what CBD is, how it's different from THC and some of the important benefits. KEY -> It doesn't get you high! Pure medicinal goodness.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are just two of the many cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant, cannabis sativa. THC is the main psychoactive ingredient while CBD is not psychoactive what so ever. This is what allows CBD to be such a beneficial healing plant for those who do not wish to have mind-altering substances. CBD has been hugely on the radar in the alternative medicine realm, and for good reasons. Tons of scientific research has been done and here are some of the key benefits of using CBD oil.

Mood Uplifting, Reduce Anxiety + Depression

One of the most common uses for CBD have been for its mood enhancing effects. CBD plays a huge role in the limbic system and is directly responsible for the release of neurotransmitters regulating our emotional state. The number of people diagnosed with mental illnesses such as anxiety or depression are growing at an alarming rate. But what are the majority of doctors doing about it? They are prescribing them with pharmaceutical drugs that have an absurd amount of side effects causing more harm than help. CBD has very, very few side effects and has been shown to be beneficial for a number of mental disorders. Not only that, it also can be taken on a daily basis for an overall mood enhancer to make you feel good and chilled out for the day! As someone who isn’t ‘diagnosed’ with a mental illness, I know on some days when I feel stressed or overwhelmed with my to-do list for the day - CBD oil is a must have and a life saver. The reason CBD has been so effective is because of its ability to act on the brains serotonin receptors, regulating mood and social behavior.

Relieve Pain & Arthritis

Research has shown that CBD oil has been effective in alleviating chronic pain, as well as pain associated with cancer treatments and arthritis. Scientists haven’t fully discovered exactly what it is that causes CBD to be an effective pain reliever but they believe CBD’s anti-inflammatory compounds and ability to activate a serotonin receptors are the key factors. In a study done by China’s Secondary Military Medical University, they found that cannabinoid receptors are found at very high levels in the joint tissues of arthritic patients. CBD is able to bind directly to these receptors activating the pathways to fight inflammation. These effects go for not only rheumatoid pain but all kinds of pain and inflammation in the body.

Relieve Digestive Problems

Gastrointestinal issues usually arise when there is difficulty pushing the food through the stomach into the GI tract or there is severe inflammation. Some diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease and leaky gut syndrome are being studied with the use of CBD. Researchers have discovered cannabinoid receptors in the digestive tract that are able to help reduce abdominal inflammation and improve gastrointestinal balance. When CBD binds to these receptors it can regulate stomach acid, nausea, bowel movements and eases cramping. This could mean a very powerful and harmless remedy for many common gastrointestinal diseases.

Reduce Severity of Seizures

CBD’s effect on epilepsy has been a huge conversation in medical news for the last few years. There have been numerous studies done showing the effects and how many epileptic patients have benefitted from CBD. If researchers are able to prove concrete data, the entire use and regulation of CBD will change in the U.S (for the good!). In a study conducted (here) on 15 patients suffering from secondary generalized epilepsy, the patients were given 200-300 mg CBD or placebo every day for 4 1/2 months. Of the 8 patients given CBD, 4 of them were free from seizures while another 3 of them showed improvement in their condition. In yet another study, after 12 weeks of consistent CBD exposure, epileptic patients were able to see a reduced convulsive seizure by 53% and 16% of the patients were completely seizure free!

And that’s not even the lot of it. The list continues of the incredible benefits of using CBD oil. It can even be used for treating our furry friends :)
