You NEED This DIY Natural Toothpaste Recipe!

Your mouth is one of the most absorbent places in the body. Did you ever stop to think about what ingredients are in your toothpaste? Even if you did - that ‘fluoride free’ or ‘all natural’ label still may be leading you to toxic ingredients and false claims.

Throw away your conventional toothpaste NOW! Throw away any toothpaste for that matter. Keep reading to find out what toxic ingredients you’re putting in your mouth EVERY single day. Even from your so called ‘all natural’ brands. Learn how to make your own very simple and cheap toothpaste from home!

Twice a day, every single day we’re putting ‘toothpaste’ all over our teeth and gums. But do you even know what’s in it? Any chemicals present in our toothpaste have it extremely easy to quickly enter into the bloodstream even if you’re spitting most of it out. For me, living a mindful, healthy life isn’t just about taking care of what food goes into my body. It’s every aspect of my life from what I put on my skin, what I wear, to what toothpaste I brush my teeth with.

Unfortunately, we live in a time where companies are allowed to lie, make false claims, use chemicals ingredients and still make millions of dollars off of us. I don’t know about you, but I will not sit back and let it happen while giving my hard earned money to these companies. It’s important to know not only WHAT you’re buying, but WHO you’re supporting too. Many companies that seem like small businesses claiming to be all natural or organic, are usually run by those big corporations that I’d rather not give my money to.

Anyways…let’s focus on toothpaste today. Because every step counts and making small changes every day is the best we can do.

Here are just a FEW of the known toxic ingredients found in conventional toothpaste.

TRICLOSAN is used as an antibacterial and prevents gingivitis. Because if this it s a known endocrine disruptor which can lead to breast, ovarian, prostate, and testicular cancer, as well as birth defects. Most commonly found in Colgate Total toothpaste that claims to be approved by the FDA to fight plaque and gingivitis.

FLUORIDE is supposed to prevent decaying teeth but has been scrutinized lately for how effective it really is. It is most dangerous with children who have the tendency to swallow a lot of the toothpaste and are at risk of fluoride accumulating in the body if they are over exposed. This could cause a major disruption of the enzymes effecting neurological and endocrine dysfunction.

SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) is used to enhance bitter tastes and is a surfactant which causes the foaming agent in toothpaste. It also happens to be a registered insecticide with environmental toxic effects. The manufacturing process causes it to be contaminated with a carcinogenic byproduct in addition to releasing volatile organic compounds into the environment. Organic farmers are not allowed to use it as a pesticide however, there’s no regulation to prevent it from being allowed in products we put in our mouth everyday.

Just to name the top three……

There’s also artificial sweeteners, propylene glycol - a skin, eye and lung irritant, DEA - a known hormone disruptor, and sometimes plastic microbes that are alarmingly dangerous for marine life.

Sooo..what REALLY gets me is after all of this research and realization I decide it will be best to switch to an ‘all natural’ toothpaste for about $8.00 a tube. I used to choose the ‘Toms’ brand a lot of health savy people know and love. Nut-uh. Not anymore. Do you know who owns Toms? COLGATE! Tom’s is not so natural and obviously not from Maine. Tom’s ‘natural care’ toothpaste still contains aluminum, zinc chloride- a harmful irritant, titanium dioxide- a human carcinogen, and SLS- the insecticide we talked about above. Ummm…..I think I'll keep my $8.00 and make my own super cheap toothpaste. Thanks.

I don't really think I need to go further into the details of the several other toxic ingredients in our daily toothpaste. I hope you’ve gotten the point by now and are ready to make your very own all natural, toxic free, super easy, and very cheap toothpaste!

P.S- My teeth have become noticeably whiter thanks to this toothpaste too! For an extra boost if you’re looking for a whitening effect, add a bit of activated charcoal. Just don’t be alarmed when your mouth turns black :)

Ingredients:

3 tbs baking soda

2 tbs melted coconut oil

1 tbs distilled water

20 drops peppermint oil

2 capsules activated charcoal (optional)

Instructions:

1.Melt coconut oil on a double burner.

2. Place all ingredients together in a glass jar.

3. Mix well.

—If you live in a place where its cold and the coconut oil hardens, you may need to add an extra tablespoon of water. Do this if the toothpaste becomes too solid to use.

—This obviously has no preservatives so keep in small batches and replace every few weeks.
